The Information Resource Center (IRC) is a reference service providing up-to-date information, to Chinese government officials, academics and journalists as well as U.S. Mission staff, on the United States, its people and its policies. The subject emphasis is on American politics and government, economics and trade, foreign affairs, education and culture.

Staffed by professional documentation and reference specialists and equipped with modern information retrieval technologies such as CD-ROMs, on-line databases and the Internet, the IRC is available to help users on most topics concerning the United States.



The IRC is free and open to Chinese audiences during business hours.

  • Research/Reference Service: Information provided upon request about most topics concerning the United States via phone calls, fax, mail, e-mail, and visits by appointment. You may also contact the IRC with research questions about the United States.
  • Periodical Holdings: About 40 American periodicals including: Newsweek, Time, The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, the Oprah Magazine and so on.
  • Reference Books & CD-ROMs: A collection of over 300 reference volumes, focused primarily on American studies.
  • Educational Material: Up-to-date materials for students who wish to study in the U.S.
  • Alert: Designed to keep the IRC users abreast of issues and concerns in the U.S., ALERT brings to your attention current articles selected by the Information Resource Center at the American Center for Educational Exchange Beijing. We bring it to you for your research or reference purposes. Single copies of individual articles are available to you upon request.
  • Electronic Bulletins: The IRC e-mails a menu of articles in English and Chinese about current issues in the United States. These materials, mostly from U.S. publications and by U.S. authors, highlight significant issues in six major areas of U.S. domestic affairs, Economics & Trade, Politics & International Relations, Contemporary Society, Information & Technology and Environment.   • Washington File: Produced by the Department of State's Office of International Information Programs, the Washington File is a valuable source of current information about the U. S. Government and its policies and is available to the general public. Transcripts of policy speeches by U. S. officials, articles on American life and institutions, and backgrounders on a variety of topics regularly appear in the Washington File. Now we have the Washington File in Chinese Meiguo Cankao .
  • Electronic Journals: The Department of State publishes five electronic journals (Economic Perspectives, U.S. Foreign Policy Agenda, U.S. Society & Values, Global Issues, and Issues of Democracy) on an irregular, rotating cycle, with a new journal appearing every three weeks. Full texts from the Department of State "Washington File" and "Electronic Journals" are available in our Information Resource Center, as well as on the Internet.
  • Free Publications: We also keep a number of free publications about the US on hand.
